The Plight of the Roma

France is expelling Gypsy – or Roma – migrants, Rome is bulldozing their settlements, race-murders strike in Bratislava, Hungary’s MEPs are calling for mass internment and their are attacks in Serbia.

Europe is persecuting an 11m strong stateless minority as the recession deepens just as their numbers are set to explode. High fertility rates and their social exclusion mean that by 2050 they are set to be at least 20% of the population of Hungary and are already over 10% of Romania and Bulgaria.

In my article in Prospect, I argue that the next few decades will see a vicious cycle of migration and expulsion deepen – perhaps catastrophically – unless the EU seriously takes steps to integrate its most persecuted people.
