Sarkozy’s troubling implication

Guest post by Sarah

There was a troubling short article in today’s Independent.

Sarkozy has already caused controversy by expelling Roma from France, and now he seems to be suggesting that Romania should itself intervene to prevent further incursions.

France has urged European leaders to force Romania to stem the flow of Roma gypsies leaving the country, suggesting that they could block Romania’s entry to the Schengen border-free zone if the government in Bucharest fails to do so.

The implication here– although I’m sure if questioned Sarkozy would gloss his statement in some more benign way– is that Romania should prevent people travelling on the basis of race/ethnicity.
