The Double Standards of Double Dealers

This is a guest post by Abu Faris

The leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hassan Nasrallah, has condemned the recent double suicide attack on a Shi’a mosque in Zahedan, Sistan-Baluchestan Province, Iran, which left at least 27 dead and for which the Sunni Baluchi Islamist group, Jundallah, have claimed responsibility. In a Hezbollah communiqué, Nasrallah loyally followed the official Iranian line and dutifully blames unnamed Western powers as being behind the outrage:

Hezbollah condemned on Friday Iran’s terrorist blasts, saying they were executed by terrorist organizations that were taught methods of murder at the hands of Western intelligence hands.

Whipping himself into a peak of simulated foam-flecked outrage, Nasrallah continues:

Hezbollah considered this crime as part of the arrogant campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran, through terrorist groups and organizations that have been raised by western intelligence, as the latter taught them combat techniques that know no mercy, indiscriminate of age or gender.

The “combat technique that know[s] no mercy, indiscriminate of age or gender” against which Nasrallah rails is suicide bombing.

Of course, being the complete hypocrite that he is, Nasrallah’s outrage about suicide bombing is very one-sided. In fact, Nasrallah only has a problem with “combat techniques that know no mercy, indiscriminate of age or gender” when such “techniques” target the people of his allies and friends. Otherwise, Nasrallah has absolutely no problem with such tactics. Indeed, he praises, lauds and encourages exactly the same tactics of suicide bombings and the targeting of civilians in dealings with the peoples of his enemies – especially if they are Israeli Jews.

Nasrallah has said:

Martyrdom operations – suicide bombings – should be exported outside Palestine. I encourage Palestinians to take suicide bombings worldwide. Don’t be shy about it.

Although he later publically denied he said it. Well, he would.

However, he was also caught stating in 1999 at a Hezbollah rally:

And on this last day of the century, I promise Israel that it will see more suicide attacks, for we will write our history with blood.

French has a neat way of expressing this sort of hypocritical duplicity: deux poids, deux mesures – “double standards” is the English equivalent. We are counselled: Do not have two differing weights in your bag – one heavy, one light. Do not have two differing measures in your house – one large, one small. (Deuteronomy, 25:13-14) Advice Nasrallah clearly rejects.
