It’s not a metaphor for anything. Or perhaps it’s a metaphor for everything. One or the other.
Is there any particular reason to root for the baby deer over the lion (into whose cage the deer wandered at the National Zoo in Washington)? If anything I feel sorrier for the lion, who just seems to be going through the motions of some half-forgotten instinct.
The deer was eventually rescued from the cage.
