Howard Jacobson in The New Republic

Much of what Howard Jacobson writes about in this piece for The New Republic– on English attitudes towards Jews and Israel– will be familiar to readers of this blog. But as he has in previous articles, he distills various troubling patterns to their unavoidable essence: most notably the “It’s not antisemitic to criticize Israel” complaint.

I’ll leave it to those who live there to judge the accuracy of his assertions. But based on what I’ve read here and elsewhere in recent years, it has the ring of truth. And it’s not a pleasant ring.
