Chavez invites al-Bashir to Venezuela

I saw it coming. El Universal reports:

Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez announced on Tuesday that he invited Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to visit Venezuela, thus supporting the Sudanese ruler, who faces an international bench warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“I spoke with al-Bashir and asked him about the risks he is facing when he visits a foreign country. I invited him to visit Caracas, and I told him, ‘I hope you do not have any problem there,'” Chávez said during his speech in the 2nd Arab-South American Summit (ASPA), held on Tuesday in Doha, EFE reported.

I guess al-Bashir, who has been charged with crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur, won’t have any problems in Venezuela– at least not from the government. However in the unlikely event he says anything critical about Chavez’s regime on his visit, he– like any other foreign visitor– could face deportation.
