Israeli apartheid?

On the occasion of Israel Apartheid Week, the Israeli deputy consul general in San Francisco has written a defense of his country (which he concedes is “far from perfect”) for the The Chronicle newspaper.

It says pretty much what you would expect– except that the deputy consul general happens to be an Arab Bedouin, who began life as a shepherd living in his family tent.

Ishmael Khaldi concludes:

To the organizers of Israel Apartheid Week I would like to say:

If Israel were an apartheid state, I would not have been appointed here, nor would I have chosen to take upon myself this duty. There are many Arabs, both within Israel and in the Palestinian territories who have taken great courage to walk the path of peace. You should stand with us, rather than against us.
