A few days ago I asked readers if they would like to express their biggest hope for Obama in eight words or less. The number of comments on that post is now approaching 1,700 and is still rising.
I was surprised at first by how many readers gave their main hope as simply that the President-Elect survive. I was inclined to believe that this was paranoia. Perhaps these readers, having been sure that Americans wouldn’t elect a black President, had simply switched over to the view that he would be killed.
But after moderating the comments for a while, I changed my mind.
Because it was a disturbing, depressing experience.
UPDATE: David Hughes, Telegraph chief leader writer, says “stop obsessing“.
