It occurs to me that the last movie I plunked down money to see in a theater was Persepolis— and that was last January. And although I check the new releases fairly regularly, I haven’t noticed anything since then that makes me yearn for a return visit.
I should note that I have strong– and perhaps unreasonable– prejudices against chick flicks, modern romantic comedies (those from the 1930s are just fine), blockbusters that feature (in the words of David Letterman) “lots of ‘splosions,” gross-out comedies and smug or didactic “political” films.
So is there anything out there now that is worth the time and effort and money to go see? I promise to give all suggestions due consideration. I’ll probably reject most of them, but take your best shot.
