Mel Gibson’s antisemitic rant after being arrested for drunk driving (he has since apologized) seems to have fascinated much of the blogosphere, but I can’t work up a lot of outrage– probably because it didn’t come as much of a shock to me.
That his movie “The Passion of the Christ” was endorsed by a number of prominent US conservatives– plus Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi (who said “The Passion” exposes “the Jews’ crime in sending Jesus to be crucified”) and Yasser Arafat (who assured us that the movie was not antisemitic)– gave me an uneasy feeling about the guy.
For those interested, Andrew Sullivan is covering at his blog the reaction of conservatives to Gibson’s remarks. Hitchens’s take is here.
