While the recent performance of the England cricket team against Australia has raised the media profile and popularity of that sport lets not forget that Scotland can be potential worldbeaters in certain types of international sporting competitions too.
Scotland are celebrating a mammoth victory against Germany which sees them through to the final of the world cup – in elephant polo.
The Scottish national team took the Germans on in the semi-final in the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament in Hua Hin in Thailand.
The 8-6 win was particularly satisfying for the Scots as the game was a rematch of the 2002 and 2003 final, which Scotland lost both times in monsoon conditions.
Lets hope this great result encourages youngsters across Scotland to take up the sport themselves. I for one can’t wait to see the East Kilbride Jumbos versus the Hilltown Hannibals in the Scottish Elephant Polo Cup one day.
Update: Paul Anderson has his own take on an earlier example of Scottish sporting prowess:
Edvard Grieg! Henrik Ibsen! Edvard Munch! Roald Amudsen! Thor Heyerdahl! Can you hear me, Thor Heyerdahl ! Your boys took one hell of a beating! Your boys took one hell of a beating!
