The Spanish civil war continues to cast a long shadow.
Spain’s right-wing Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar has decided against going ahead with a UN proposal to identify thousands of Spaniards still lying in anonymous graves. The 30,000 or so occupants of the graves had been murdered by Franco during and after the civil war.
On the other hand he seems happy to pay for the repatriation of the bodies of a similar number of Spaniards who died fighting for Hitler during his ill-starred attack on the Soviet Union.
