Commenters to this weblog– usually in the context of Israel-bashing– sometimes suggest that Israelis and Palestinians should forget the whole idea of separate states, join together in a “secular, democratic” binational state and, presumably, live peacefully ever after.
My favorite Israeli blogger– Imshin of Not a Fish— has translated from Hebrew a recent article about this idea by the Israeli intellectual Shlomo Avineri. Avineri understands the desperation of some who support the idea, but explains how misbegotten the scheme is for both Israelis and Palestinians.
